Shore Experiences by Seabourn: Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock Hike

Stavanger, Norway

Part of our optional Ventures by Seabourn™ program, this shore excursion offers guests visiting Stavenger, Norway the opportunity to experience Pulpit Rock, or Preikestolen, a breathtaking rocky plateau that towers 2,000 feet above Lysefjord.

From the pier, it’s a short drive to the local ferry for a 40-minute crossing to the village of Tau where guests then enjoy a 40-minute transfer through scenic landscapes that brings them to the Visitor Center, from where the trail starts. The hike to the top of Pulpit Rock takes about two hours (four hours round trip) over a distance of 2.4 miles (4.8 miles round trip), with a climb of about 1,100 feet in elevation.

At the top, the stupendous views over Lysefjord and the surrounding mountains have the uncanny ability to humble even the most experienced traveler. Pulpit Rock, about 270 square feet on top, is one of several so-called pressure-release faults on the fjord. Legend holds that if seven sisters marry seven brothers from the Lysefjord area, the cliff will fall into the fjord, creating a tsunami that will destroy all life on the fjord. There’s no need for guests to panic though — large families are uncommon in Norway!

This incredible and memorable optional shore excursion is available on Seabourn Northern Europe itineraries in 2019 and 2020.

The hike is four hours or more, round trip, over a distance of 4.8 miles, with a climb of about 1,100 feet in elevation. Please realistically assess physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, over unpaved, rough walking tracks with many steps, granite slabs and some potentially boggy sections. Consider bringing walking sticks. Wear sturdy walking shoes.
